Making a sunburst curtain full instructions Illustrated instructions on sewing a fanlight curtain

Making a Sunburst Curtain:

These fitted sheer, or lightweight curtains are ideal on a half round window at the top of a door, a fanlight window, or to cover an arched window. Gathered into the centre they can make a feature of a shaped window. Only one length of fabric is needed. Fixed to the outer curve with Velcro means that these sunburst curtains are easily removed for laundering.
These free illustrated instructions will enable you to make your own sunburst curtain treatment.

Requirements:

Sheer or lightweight fabric.
A finished sunburst curtain on an arched window

Stick and sew Velcro.

Matching thread.

Length of cord and small safety pin for plain curtain.

Measuring up:

Measure the half circle of the window frame. This will be the finished length of the sunburst curtain, add 2" (5cms) for side hems. If a fuller curtain is required, the half circle measurement can be multiplied by 2 before adding the hem allowance. In which case the top edge will need to be gathered to the half circle measurement before the Velcro is stitched on.
Measuring for sunburst curtain

Measure the radius of the half circle from the outside of the frame at various places and take an average if there are differences. This will be the finished width of the sunburst curtain, add 1" (2.5cms) for bottom hem, ½" (13 mm) for top hem.

Making a sunburst curtain:

Attach the sticky side of the Velcro to the curved frame of the window.
Stitching hems of sunburst curtain

Cut fabric to required size.

Turn in a double ½" (13 mm) seam at each side edge, pin, stitch and press.

Turn up a double ½" (13 mm) hem at the bottom edge, pin, stitch and press.

Turn down ½" (13 mm) at top edge and pin.

Pin the sew side of the Velcro along the top edge on the wrong side, close to the top fold and covering the raw edge of fabric.

Stitch the Velcro in place along both edges.

Attach the safety pin to one end of the length of cord and thread it through the bottom hem.
Gathering a plain sunburst curtain

Press the two sides of the Velco firmly together starting at one side of the window and working around the curve.

Pull both ends of the cord to gather the bottom edge towards the centre, as tightly as possible.

Tie the cord firmly and tuck the ends away.

Adjust the gathers evenly.
