Instructions on how to make a zipped cushion Zipped cushion making instructions

Making A Zipped Cushion:

A zip is normally added to a cushion cover to enable it to be easily laundered and this is especially true when using feather cushion pads. These free illustrated sewing instructions will enable you to make your own zipped cushions.

New instructions available

Requirements:

A square zipped cushion

Square cushion pad in desired size.

Suitable fabric.

Matching thread.

Zip, 2 inches (5cms) shorter than the width of the cushion pad.

Making the Cushion:

Measure the cushion pad, place the tape measure seam to seam and add a seam allowance of 5/8 inch (1.5cms) to all edges.

Cut out 2 pieces of fabric to the chosen size including seam allowance.

Place fabric right sides together and tack across 1 side. Machine stitch 1.5 inches (4cms) in from each edge securing thread ends (See figure 1). Press seam open. Place zip right side down over tacked section of seam. Pin, tack and stitch each side of zip, using a zipper foot on your sewing machine, close to teeth of zip (See figure 2). Remove tacking stitches and open zip.

With right sides together pin, tack and stitch round other 3 sides and turn right side out through zip.

Insert cushion pad.

If required stitch braid or lace around the edges using a small  backstitch.
